My Chemical Romance
So long and goodnight.
— My Chemical Romance
What better way to start off Emo’s Corner than talking about all of this MCR news! First off I’d like to say that I am THRILLED TO BITS that they are doing a reunion show! Almost cried from the excitement. Then I almost cried again after seeing that it’s all the way in California… It’s still exciting as hell to see them back together! It’s not yet confirmed if this is a full blown reunion, or if it’s just a single reunion show. We can only hope that this show will lead to a tour!
Onto my opinions of the band! (Spoiler alert, it will be a shining review.) My Chemical Romance is, by far, one of the biggest pioneers of the emo genre. Despite lead singer Gerard Way HATING the term “emo” and wishing that MCR was never lumped into that category, emo kids everywhere grasped onto their music and made it their anthem. Forming in 2001, and releasing their first studio album “I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love” in 2002, My Chemical Romance hit the scene hard with their edgy, pain-filled lyrics that angsty and emotional teenagers (and strange little 6 year olds, such as myself) all felt like they could all relate to. “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge” was their second studio album, released in 2004. This album brought us some of the most famous songs from the band, such as “Helena,” “I’m Not Okay (I Promise),” and “The Ghost of You.” This album was right around the time my lifelong, never ending emo phase really started and will always hold a very special place to me. I would sit in my room for hours listening to this album on repeat and ignoring every little thing around me. Then came 2006. With “The Black Parade” album releasing this year, if you weren’t emo before, you probably were now! Probably the most iconic My Chemical Romance song ever was released. “Welcome to the Black Parade” became the anthem for emo kids everywhere, and remains so to this day. I dare anyone to listen to that song without turning the volume all the way up and belting it out! The last studio album that they released was “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys” in 2010. While this album didn’t chart as high as their previous albums, we still got some gems from it, like “Sing” and “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na).” Though their history may not be as extensive as some bands, the music they produced was powerful and moving; influencing a generation and shaping the emo culture into what it is now. I will say without any hesitation that My Chemical Romance is absolute one of the best bands ever. That band was my number one favorite band for over 10 years, and it is still one of my number one bands. Listening to them got me though some really hard times and always made me feel like I could take on anything that came my way. I can only hope that this reunion show will lead to more, making all of my pre-teen emo dreams of seeing them live come true!
